Why Batanes feels different
Batanes is the smallest province in the country, closer to Taiwan than to Manila, shaped entirely by wind. The locals — the Ivatan — build limestone houses with roofs weighted by stone because typhoons are a design constraint, not an occasional inconvenience. The hills are treeless and green from Atlantic-like weather patterns. Nothing on the mainland feels like this.
The flight bottleneck
BSO has one runway and three carriers: SkyJet, Cebu Pacific, and PAL. Each runs daily flights from Manila (1h 30m block time). Fares are among the most expensive domestic routes: ₱6,000–₱12,000 round-trip for economy. Seat sales (piso sales) do happen; book 3 months out.
The 3-day standard itinerary
Day 1 — North Batan
Vayang Rolling Hills, Basco Lighthouse, Naidi Hills, Marlboro Country (Racuh a Payaman). Most tours run this as a half-day; add a Chamantad-Tinyan Viewpoint stop if you have the energy. Full-day van tour: ₱2,500/vehicle (up to 4).
Day 2 — Sabtang Island
Ferry from Ivana Port, Batan to Sabtang Port. ₱100 one-way, 30 minutes on a falowa (traditional small boat, open-top, splashy). Sabtang's highlights: Chavayan Village (still-lived-in limestone-house community), Savidug stone houses, Morong Beach (natural arch), and Nakabuang Beach for lunch. Full-day tour: ₱1,800/person including tricycle and lunch.
Day 3 — South Batan
Mahatao Tayid Lighthouse, the Blank Book Honesty Coffee Shop (yes, it's a real thing — pay what you owe in the notebook), Alapad Hills, Songsong Ruins, Imnajbu, and the tiny but photogenic House of Dakay. Full-day tour with the same van from Day 1: add ₱2,000.

Homestay etiquette
- Ask before photographing houses — they're family homes, not museums
- Leave shoes outside where requested
- Pay cash; card machines don't exist outside Basco center
- Bring your own toiletries; some homestays are basic
- Greet in Ivatan: "Kapian ka" (thank you), "Arava" (farewell)
Frequently asked questions
When is the best month to visit Batanes?
March to May. Low typhoon risk, green hills, mild temperatures (22–28°C). June–October is typhoon season. November–February is windy and often cloud-covered.
Can I ferry to Batanes from Manila?
Not commercially. A weekly cargo boat from Manila port exists but is not passenger-rated. The flight is effectively mandatory.
Is renting a motorbike in Batanes a good idea?
Yes for experienced riders — ₱500/day. Roads are decent, traffic is minimal. The wind, however, is not a joke on the northwestern coast; respect it.
Is the Honesty Coffee Shop really unmanned?
Yes. You take what you want from the shelves, write it in the notebook, and leave money in the box. It works because Batanes' crime rate is close to zero.
How many days do I need in Batanes?
3 full days on the ground minimum. 4 if you want to include Itbayat Island (3rd of the 3 inhabited islands; ferry is weather-dependent and you could get stranded, which is part of the charm).
