El Nido Island Hopping on a Budget: Which Tour (A, B, C, or D) Is Actually Worth It

Tour A is the postcard (lagoons). Tour C is the swimming-pool water. Tour B is for cave people. Tour D is the quiet one. If you only have one day, do Tour A early — the Big Lagoon closes the boat-in window if too many groups arrive late.

Getting there without losing half a day

There is no commercial airport in El Nido town itself — or rather, Lio airstrip exists but flights are expensive and rare. Most travelers fly to Puerto Princesa (PPS) and then take a 5–6 hour van up the spine of Palawan. The van isn't scenic for the first 3 hours; bring a podcast.

  • MNL → PPS flights: ₱1,299–₱3,000 depending on season
  • PPS van terminal to El Nido town proper: ₱700–₱900 shared van
  • Total travel time, door to door: ~9 hours with a reasonable buffer

The four tours, ranked by what you actually want

Tour A — The one on the postcard

Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu, Seven Commandos. If you've seen El Nido on Instagram, 80% of those photos are Tour A. Downside: it's the most crowded and DENR caps daily boat entries to Big Lagoon — late arrivals get queued.

Tour C — The swimming pool water

Helicopter Island, Hidden Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Secret Beach, Star Beach. Clearer water on average than Tour A because fewer boats. This is the one we'd pick if forced to choose only one.

Tour B — Snorkel over caves

Entalula Beach, Cudugnon Cave, Snake Island (sandbar!), Pinagbuyutan. Good for people who like geology with their swimming. A bit slower because of the boat transfers between far stops.

Tour D — The one nobody books

Cadlao Lagoon, Paradise Beach, Bukal Beach, Ipil Beach. Quieter because it's closest to town (less "exotic" on paper). Great if you just want chill beach time with snorkel gear and fewer selfies.

Costs & what's included

All four tours include the boatman, lunch (typically grilled fish, pork, rice, fruit), snorkel gear, and a bottle of water. Environmental Eco-Tourism Development Fee (ETDF) is ₱200 and is usually billed separately by tour operators — it's valid for 10 days across all tours, so pay once.

Two-day plan that doesn't burn you out

  1. Day 1 — Tour C in the morning (arrive at pier by 8 a.m.), lunch on a pink beach, back by 4 p.m. Walk the main road for dinner at Altrove (sourdough pizza that makes sense in a fishing town).
  2. Day 2 — Tour A the next morning. Bring earplugs for the Big Lagoon crowd and a dry-bag for the Small Lagoon paddle.
  3. Day 3 — Lounge at Nacpan Beach (tricycle: ₱500 each way). Most people rush; you shouldn't.

Frequently asked questions

Which El Nido tour is best if I can only do one?

Tour C. You get the clearest water on average plus Hidden Beach. Tour A is the iconic shot but more crowded — if you've already seen Big Lagoon on someone else's feed, you won't feel short-changed skipping it.

How much does a 3-day El Nido trip cost from Manila?

Around ₱12,000–₱16,000 all-in per person (off-peak): ₱3,000 flights, ₱1,700 vans round-trip, ₱4,000 accommodation, ₱3,000 tours, ₱3,000 food. Peak season adds ~₱5,000.

Can you do El Nido as a day trip from Puerto Princesa?

Technically yes, realistically no. The van is 5–6 hours each way. You'll spend more time looking at dashboards than beaches.

Is El Nido better than Coron?

Different vibes. El Nido = lagoons, beach clubs, better food scene. Coron = shipwrecks, cleaner deeper water, fewer people on tours. Do both if you can.

Do tours run in the rainy season?

Yes — Palawan rain is typically short afternoon bursts. If PCG raises a small-craft advisory, tours pause. Ask your hotel to confirm the night before.
