Siargao for First-Timers: Where to Surf Cloud 9 as a Beginner (and What Not to Wear)

First-timers shouldn't actually surf Cloud 9 itself — it's a reef break. Learn at Jacking Horse or Quiksilver beach break across the lot, graduate later. September–November has the best swell; June is glassy and mellow.

What "Siargao" actually means for first-timers

Siargao is two experiences that share the same airport. One: General Luna (GL) is the surf and nightlife town — most hostels, coffee shops, and coconut-framed photos happen here. Two: Pacifico, Burgos, and the north are quieter beach villages with wilder surf and fewer menus in English.

If it's your first time and you have only a long weekend, base yourself in GL. You can tricycle anywhere interesting for ₱100–₱500.

The truth about Cloud 9

Cloud 9 is world-famous because it's a heavy, hollow reef break. That's exactly why beginners shouldn't paddle out there on day one. The reef is 1.5 meters under at low tide. Locals will tell you this politely the first time and impatiently the second.

The beginner wave is Jacking Horse, literally across the parking lot from the Cloud 9 boardwalk. Sand bottom, rolling waves, dozens of students at any given moment. The Quiksilver beach break further north is the other forgiving option.

Booking a lesson that's actually worth it

  • Group lesson: ₱500–₱800 for 1.5 hours, board + instructor included
  • 1-on-1 lesson: ₱1,000–₱1,500, same time; much faster progress
  • Board rental only: ₱200/hour or ₱800/day once you know what you're doing

When to go: swell vs smiles

September to early November is peak: consistent swell from the Pacific, most photogenic waves. December is good but windier. June–August is glassy and mellow — perfect for beginners who want gentle, clean sets and less crowd pressure.

What to pack (and not)

  • Rashguard (the sun is no joke; tropical reef burn is real)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — non-reef-safe sunscreen is technically banned for tours
  • Aqua shoes for Magpupungko rock pools (Day 3)
  • Small bills — many tricycle drivers can't break ₱1,000
