When to go (hint: August)

Peak durian season is August to October — Magsaysay Park and the Bankerohan Market stalls have fresh Puyat, Arancillo, and D101 varieties at ₱100–₱180/kg. Outside of season, you can find frozen durian year-round but it's not the same.

Day 1 — Eden Nature Park + Jack's Ridge

Eden Nature Park is a working mountain resort 45 minutes from downtown, 900m elevation, cool enough to need a light jacket in the morning. Day tour is ₱1,000/person including lunch buffet and a guided tram around the 80-hectare grounds.

Dinner at Jack's Ridge — Matina Hills, panoramic city view, seafood-heavy menu. Book the Taklobo or Sunset Veranda section specifically. Expect ₱800–₱1,200/person including drinks.

Day 2 — Samal Island

Samal is a 15-minute barge ride from Sasa Wharf in Davao. ₱10/person on the public ferry; cars are ₱400. Pick one of three days:

Beach day — Pearl Farm Beach Resort

Day pass at Pearl Farm is ₱3,800/person including lunch, one boat transfer, and access to the resort pools and private beach. It's pricey but genuinely special — the resort is on the west side of Samal and you'd never see it otherwise.

Budget day — Canibad Beach

Canibad is the hidden cove on the east side. ₱100 entrance, ₱500 cottage rental, bring your own food. The sand is fine-white and the water drops to swimmable depth within 5 meters.

Adventure day — Hagimit Falls + Monfort Bat Cave

Hagimit is a short hike to three-tier waterfalls (₱50 entrance). Monfort has the world's largest known colony of fruit bats — Guinness-registered, no exaggeration. ₱100 entrance, stay upwind.

Day 3 — City, durian, and depart

  1. Philippine Eagle Center (morning, 8–11 a.m.) — ₱150 entrance. The Philippine Eagle is one of the largest in the world; only ~400 left.
  2. People's Park (1 hour) — cool murals, good walking.
  3. Aldevinco Shopping Center — Mindanao textiles and trinkets.
  4. Magsaysay Park durian stalls (lunch-adjacent) — ₱100–₱180/kg depending on variety.
  5. Lunch at Blugre Coffee or Kanto Freestyle Bbq — airport-adjacent picks.

Where to sleep

  • Dusit D2 Davao — polished, near Roxas Ave, ₱5,500/night
  • The Pinnacle Hotel — reliable mid-range, ₱3,200/night
  • Seda Abreeza — business-style, close to the mall, ₱4,800/night

Frequently asked questions

Is Davao safe for tourists?

Yes. Davao City has strict local ordinances (anti-smoking, anti-firecracker, anti-loitering at night) and a visible police presence. Common-sense precautions as elsewhere.

How much is the Davao to Samal ferry?

₱10 per person on the public RORO from Sasa Wharf. ₱400 per car. It runs every 20–30 minutes from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Can you climb Mount Apo as a tourist?

Yes — with a permit and a licensed guide. Full 2–3 day trek costs ₱4,500–₱6,500 including permit, guide, meals. Best month: April.

When is durian season in Davao?

August to October for peak varieties. Some farms produce year-round but quality and price shift significantly.

Is Pearl Farm Resort worth the day pass price?

If you value solitude and polished service, yes. If you're a backpacker or family of five, Canibad Beach is better value for a similar swim.
